Quinnipiac University

School of Business Student Managed Portfolio

The Student-Managed Portfolio gives undergraduate finance majors the rare opportunity to develop investment strategies and apply portfolio management techniques with real funds as they seek to outperform the market and prepare for a career in finance. Every decision is made by students with mentorship from industry-leading faculty.

Driving Exponential Growth Since 2003

Undergraduate finance majors at Quinnipiac are incredibly well-positioned to secure coveted internships and full-time positions thanks to the skills and experience they gain while working to grow the Student-Managed Portfolio.

Born from a seed investment of $25,000 in the fall of 2003, the Student-Managed Portfolio has since ballooned to more than $4 million through a combination of investment returns, additional allocations from the Quinnipiac University Endowment and donations from alumni, community partners and friends of the university.

The Student Managed Portfolio has two funds:
  • Value Portfolio: looking for longer-term, well-performing companies that generally issue dividends and aim to provide consistent returns over time

  • Growth Portfolio: looking for companies that have “growth stories” and well-above-average projected revenue growth in the coming years

Real-World Immersive Learning

Housed within the curriculum of FIN 450: Applied Portfolio Management, the Student Managed Portfolio raises the stakes as students manage real funds and assume roles that mirror those they'll encounter at the launch of their careers in the financial sector.

Students begin their experience as equity analysts. They are placed on a sector team and responsible for monitoring the companies in their sector, performing comprehensive financial analyses and presenting recommendations to increase or decrease existing investments. Equity analysts are also expected to research, identify and pitch new investment opportunities for either the growth or value funds.

Successful equity analysts have the opportunity to be promoted to fund managers. Fund managers within the Student Managed Portfolio make final allocation recommendations for both funds, oversee the completion of cumulative performance reports and present a comprehensive global macro outlook to inform future investment decisions and asset allocation choices.
