Quinnipiac's Kappa Psi chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity was recently chosen as one of the top 11 chapters in the United States and Canada.

"Each of us is one equal piece contributing to this great accomplishment," said chapter president Dan Romanoff.

To be eligible for the designation, the fraternity had to demonstrate its recruitment efforts, chapter size, community service initiatives, alumni relations, academic success and extracurricular activities. The chapter also needed to recruit 20 men and initiate at least 80 percent of them.

The group was required to raise at least $600 dollars for charity. The students held raffles, hosted a football tournament and collected donations from local businesses and family members. The group also raised money through its annual philanthropic event, the Alzheimer's Walk event in Sleeping Giant State Park.

The chapter also held a number of community events to meet its goal of 10 hours of community service per member. The group teamed up with another fraternity on campus to host a Red Cross Blood Drive, presented a mock car crash with Students Against Drunk Driving and organized a White Ribbon Campaign, which encourages men to speak out against domestic violence.

The top chapter designation also required the group to host three alumni events, publish four alumni communications and establish a board of advisers. The group's cumulative grade point average had to be equal or greater than any other male fraternity on campus, and its members had to participate in extracurricular activities and fraternity leadership retreats and conferences.

"This is a huge honor for us, especially since we are such a small school compared to the other winners. It really shows how strong our bond is as a chapter," said Matt Lesmeister, public relations chairman for TKE.

Other top TKE chapter awards were given to the University of Florida, George Washington University, Drexel University, Millikin University, Towson University, University of Louisville, University of Maryland, Susquehanna University, Southern Illinois University and Northwest Missouri State University.

The Kappa Psi chapter currently has 72 members and a cumulative GPA of 3.1. Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity currently has 266 active chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Quinnipiac's chapter was founded in 1967.
