Dec. 3, 2008

The Relay for Life of Quinnipiac University, an event that raised more than $114,000 for the American Cancer Society earlier this year, was named the American Cancer Society's number one youth event at the New England Division Relay for Life Summit on Nov. 7 in Springfield, Mass.

Relay for Life of Quinnipiac University was also the recipient of the "2008 Nationwide Top Five Youth Per Capita Award" and the "Rookie of the Year" award for being the number one new event in 2008.

Students teamed up with the American Cancer Society to plan the Relay for Life of Quinnipiac University last spring. The event brought together more than 1,000 students and faculty to help in the fight against cancer. This was the University's first time hosting the event.

Relay for Life is the signature activity of the American Cancer Society. It is a 24-hour community walking event to raise money for cancer patients in the local community. The money raised is used for patient care services and cancer research, which is the hope for advancements in technology, treatments and a cure. The ultimate goal is to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering through research, education, advocacy and service.

This year's event will take place April 24-25, 2009, on the University's Mount Carmel Campus.
