Christopher won for best spot news by a small station for his story “New Haven Crime."
Savino, who also is WQUN’s traffic manager and afternoon anchor, won for best newscast by small station for "New Haven County Tonight," a news show airing weekdays from 6:06 to 6:25 p.m.
Christopher and Savino received the awards at a ceremony at the Hartford Marriott April 13.
This is Christopher’s second Associated Press award. He won in 2004 for best spot news for his story "Milford Power Plant Contamination.” Christopher has freelanced for WQUN for five years and has worked as a news broadcaster for 30 years, mostly in Connecticut.
This is Savino’s third straight Associated Press award. He won for best feature story by a small station in 2005 and best newscast by a small station in 2004.
Savino joined WQUN in 2004. Previously, he was an executive producer with Radio America in Arlington, Va. His first on-air job was at WBIS-AM in Bristol. He was an executive producer at WTIC News Talk 1080 in Farmington and WICC 600 in Bridgeport. He also has worked at WWYZ 92.5 FM in Hartford, WATR 1320-AM in Waterbury, WHYN News Talk 560 in Springfield, Mass., and 1480 WSAR AM in Somerset, Mass.
