The Eta Xi chapter of the Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity at Quinnipiac received three awards, including the coveted Golden Kite Award, at its biennial Grand Convention held June 18-22 in Miami, Fla.

The fraternity's highest honor, the Golden Kite Award was given to 23 out of 127 college chapters this year. Criteria for the award include excellence in academics, leadership, member programming, philanthropic activities and service.

"I was told by the outgoing fraternity president that it's incredibly rare and practically unheard of for a recently-established chapter to obtain Golden Kite status so quickly," said Kelly Stafford, president of the Quinnipiac chapter.

"I can't begin to explain the pride I have in our women, and I foresee this as a standard which the members of Eta Xi will strive to maintain for years to come," she said.

The Eta Xi Chapter was established at Quinnipiac in November 2006. The group's philanthropic activities include volunteering as Court Appointed Special Advocates. These trained volunteers are appointed by a judge to speak for abused and neglected children in the courts. CASA volunteers research the child's background details to help the court make a sound decision about the child's future.

The chapter also received the Excellence in Finance award and the second-place award for Excellence in Balanced Woman Member Education Program, which recognizes chapters for creating innovative educational programs on topics such as hazing, alcohol consumption, eating disorders, health and safety.
