Student Activities

School of Business students are active in clubs on campus and take part in a range of annual competitions. Our students frequently garner awards and recognition for their efforts. They land great internships and volunteer their time to worthy causes. Here are just a few of their accomplishments:

Competitions and Conferences

Each year, Quinnipiac students take part in the Connecticut Collegiate Business Plan Competition, competing for grant money to launch their business and a trophy. Students must present their plans to a panel of investors and business development experts. School of Business student Griffin McGrath and his partner Chris Lupfer, an interactive digital design in the College of Arts and Sciences, won the 2008 competition for their entry, "ActiveOwl," an online social network destination for active adults and wired seniors. Quinnipiac students won the Northeast regional competition of the National Student Advertising Competition in 2007. Each team developed integrated marketing communications campaign for the client, which is a corporate sponsor of the competition. The sponsor provides a case study with a current advertising challenge for the students. Students develop a written plan and an oral presentation to pitch their campaign to a panel of advertising professionals who serve as judges. Learn more...

Students have also fared well in international business competitions, such as the Academy of International Business conference. In 2008, School of Business students Nicole Adams and Fadila Dawuni won the William J. Ziegler Best Student Paper Award at the Southeast chapter of the conference for their paper, "Culture as a Fundamental Block to Understanding of Emotional Intelligence Traits: The Role of Gender." It beat out eight doctoral students' papers and is under review to be published in a journal. Read more…

Business Student Organizations

School of Business students are active in student organizations. The activities of one group, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) are helping to improve the lives of people on the other side of the globe. Quinnipiac's SIFE chapter developed a partnership with people in the village of Bawa, located in Cameroon, Africa, who needed a health center and better access to clean water. The students launched a nonprofit coffee business, Café Cameroon, to help Bawa residents export their high-grade coffee beans to the United States. All revenue goes toward the health center project. SIFE recognized the Quinnipiac chapter and the Café Cameroon project by selecting it to appear in the national organization's new international marketing campaign, "Products of Success." Read more…

Quinnipiac's student chapter of the Financial Management Association earned the Bronze National Honor Society Membership Development Award for the 2007 - 2008 academic year for excellence in the recruitment of new student members. The group was recognized with a special plaque and mentioned in the international organization's publications.

In addition to SIFE and FMA, there are many other student groups dedicated to a variety of academic interests, including the American Marketing Association, the International Business Society, the Investment Club and the Accounting Society. Learn more about student groups...

Volunteerism

Quinnipiac students also give back to the local community. Advertising major Elizabeth Logue designed a new patch for Mount Carmel, Engine No. 5 of the Hamden Fire Department. She collaborated with members of Engine 5 to design the "First Due to QU" patch, which recognizes the firefighters for being the first responders to all emergencies at Quinnipiac. Read more...

Honor Society

School of Business students have been recognized for their success in the classroom. Quinnipiac's chapter Beta Gamma Sigma, the national honor society for undergraduate and graduate business students, was named a Premier Chapter for the 2007-2008 academic year. The Quinnipiac chapter was recognized for the fourth consecutive year for valuing academic excellence and having diligent faculty advisers working to enhance Beta Gamma Sigma's reputation on campus. Internships

Many School of Business students pursue summer internships to hone skills and apply knowledge learned in the classroom to a real-world professional setting. For example, economics major Jonathan Wolff landed a prestigious internship the financial analysis section of the Hungarian Central Bank, where he spent his days collecting data on Europe and research by other European central banks to help the monetary policy team make informed decisions for the monthly key rate meeting.

A student in the MBA program, Janette Lopez, got a chance to polish her management skills with an executive intern position at Target, where she supervised a group of hourly workers and learned about corporate philosophy, employee management and a range of other skills. Read more…

International Opportunities

Students in the Master in Business Administration program have had the opportunity to study abroad. In 2008, nine MBA students traveled to Budapest, Hungary, with economics professor Chris Ball. Highlights of the trip included a lecture by the former Hungarian foreign minister and ambassador to the United States, visits with leaders of Parliament and the Hungarian Central Bank, and visits to several major Hungarian companies as well as the Budapest office of Morgan Stanley. School of Business students also have the chance to work with entrepreneurs across the globe. In 2008, professors of management David Cadden and Ronald McMullen led a group of business students to Nicaragua, where they helped entrepreneurs launch their business idea or expand their existing business. The trip helped students gain a sense of unique business problems for companies in less developed economies. Students helped to write total business plans or plans for a specific focus, such as marketing or operations.
