Students will participate in hands-on workshops scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, in the Ed McMahon Mass Communications Center, the Lender School of Business Center, Alumni Hall and the Carl Hansen Student Center on the Mount Carmel Campus. A snow date has been set for Wednesday, Jan. 13.
The students will study producing, camera, lighting, editing, multimedia production and design for both traditional and emerging broadcast platforms.
Liam O'Brien, a professor of communications, will participate through a live feed from Cape Town, South Africa, where he and 12 undergraduates are shooting a documentary.
"This program is unique nationally for its cutting-edge involvement in digital media arts technology for high school students, in their preparation for higher education work in film, video and interactive digital media production and design and for their future careers in the entertainment and information industries," O'Brien said.
Connecticut Career Choices, an initiative of the state's Office for Workforce Competitiveness, engages high school students throughout the state in education that stimulates interest and develops skills in science, technology, engineering and math.
The Digital Media and Movie Making Program, currently in 11 Connecticut high schools, is an important part of the technology programming. The University has been involved since the inception with the Connecticut Career Choices' Digital Media and Movie Making Program.
