BS in Radiologic Sciences

The bachelor of science in radiologic sciences is a three-year accelerated degree, with the option to complete the degree in four years. Students may select the four-year option with consultation from their academic advisor. Graduates are ready for entry-level employment as radiographers.

Radiographers are essential members of the health care team. Their knowledge of radiation protection, physics and biology, as well as technical positioning, allows them to deliver the safest and highest quality patient care through the use of imaging modalities. In the evolving world of medicine, high technology imaging has become multi-faceted, both in modalities and operationally.

This program offers both knowledge and basic clinical cross-training in diverse aspects of patient care for the student who is motivated to become a member of this specialty.

The first year of the bachelor's degree program consists of University Curriculum studies. The component of the program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology begins in the second year of study. During the second and third years, the students concentrate on didactic radiography classes and laboratory sessions on campus and clinical education at multiple clinical education centers.

The curriculum is structured so students can apply the knowledge and skills developed in the classroom and laboratory to the care of patients in the clinical setting. Beginning in the spring semester of the sophomore year and continuing throughout the program, didactic and clinical courses are taken simultaneously to provide the opportunity for immediate application and reinforcement. At the end of the junior year, students will be eligible for graduation with their bachelor's degree in diagnostic imaging, and are eligible to apply for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination. Upon satisfactory achievement on this national examination, students are eligible for radiologic technology licensure in Connecticut and other states.

Students who are graduates of a Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) accredited radiology program and credentialed by the ARRT are eligible for degree completion in the bachelor's degree program.

Registered radiographers may apply to the bachelor of science program either on a full-time or part-time basis. Interested applicants should contact the transfer admissions office for requirements and deadlines for application submission.

Mission Statement

The Quinnipiac University radiologic sciences program supports the mission statements of both Quinnipiac University and the School of Health Sciences and their commitment to excellence in education.

The mission of the program is to develop students' technical and interpersonal communication skills through a logical, organized and rigorous sequence of didactic, laboratory and clinical experiences.

The program offers multiple clinical assignments to provide maximum exposure to diversified radiographic procedures and imaging protocols. In addition, the program prepares graduates competent in the art and science of radiography.

Graduates of the radiologic sciences program meet the needs of the community as efficient and highly qualified professionals. The program prepares students for career entry and to move on to advanced study.

  • The 5-year job placement rate from May 2010 - May 2014 is 93 percent of those seeking employment. The cohort for determining this percentage is based on those seeking employment as radiographers and does not include those continuing at Quinnipiac University to complete the bachelor's degree as full-time students.

In addition to the general policies of Quinnipiac University, such as due process and academic honesty, the following apply to students enrolled in the radiologic sciences program:

Progression in the Program

After completion of the freshman year, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a programmatic GPA of 3.0 are required to progress into the major. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a programmatic GPA of 3.0 to remain in academic good standing throughout the program. If a student does not maintain the GPA requirements at any point during the professional component of the program, the student may be dismissed.

The following courses must be completed by fall sophomore year:

  1. RS 100 and RS 101
  2. MA 275 - Students requiring a math prerequisite should take MA 107, which requires a C- or above in order to progress into MA 275
  3. BIO 101 and 102 pass with a C- or above
  4. Pass Physics or Chemistry

Multiple clinical education centers are used throughout the professional component of the program. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from these sites.

Summer Study
All students are required to perform one clinical assignment during the summer semester, second year (RS 253). This clinical practicum is performed during summer sessions I and II and may be performed only at a clinical affiliation currently approved by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) for the program.

  1. Initial placement in the English and mathematics courses is determined by placement examination and an evaluation of high school units presented. The minimum mathematics requirement is MA 275 or its equivalent. 
  2. BIO 101-102 are required courses for the diagnostic imaging program and may be used to meet the University core sciences requirement.
  3. All diagnostic imaging course requirements must be completed in the appropriate semester as indicated above. 
  4. The diagnostic imaging program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, 20 N. Wacker Dr., Suite 900, Chicago, Illinois 60606-2901.

Health Requirements

All students entering the Radiologic Sciences program must be in good health and free of communicable disease. Prior to entering the program, the student must show proof of:

  • Recent (within six months and within the calendar year of entering the program) complete physical examination with vision testing for color blindness
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine - both dose 1 and 2
  • Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis vaccine - must be within 10 years and be current until date of graduation
  • Hepatitis B vaccine - doses 1, 2 and 3
  • Polio vaccine
  • Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) or negative chest X-ray within two months of entering PA program

As part of the Quinnipiac University Clinical Affiliation Agreement and in an effort to protect students and the patients they care for, prior to entering the program DI students are required to show proof of titer for each of the following:

  • Rubella
  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Varicella
  • Hepatitis B

All health requirements are collected and reviewed by the University's electronic health record collection and storage service on a regular basis and students are notified of any deficiencies. It is the student's responsibility to see that all health requirements including immunizations and titers are up to date. No student will be allowed to matriculate in the program, participate in a clinical experience or in any class where there is the potential for exposure to blood and airborne pathogens without proof of physical exam, immunizations and titers. No one will be permitted to begin clinical contact without documentation of physical exam, immunizations and immunity (including the requested titers).

Immunization Policy
If a student is unable to confirm immunization status or unable to obtain immunizations due to personal, religious or medical reasons, the Quinnipiac DI Program cannot guarantee the student's placement at a clinical site and may limit the student's ability to successfully complete and graduate from the program. Completion of all clinical rotations is required for successful completion of the program.

Influenza Vaccination
The DI program requires all students to obtain the influenza vaccine in the fall of their second year, as well as every fall in which the student is participating in the clinic. If a student is unable to receive the influenza vaccine, they are required to complete the University influenza vaccination declination form. By declining the influenza vaccine, the student acknowledges that clinical placement may be limited or denied due to the requirements for influenza vaccine by clinical affiliates.

Health/Medical Insurance Policy
All QU radiologic sciences students must maintain health/medical insurance through the University. Students must show proof of health care coverage, as well as maintain coverage for the entire program. Students must purchase health insurance through the University insurance agent unless they can show proof of other adequate coverage.

Technical Standards

The imaging professional integrates scientific knowledge and technical skills with effective patient interactions. A main goal of a competent radiologic technologist is the deliverance of quality patient care, and useful diagnostic information. The section below lists some of the practice standards of the profession in basic terms. However, the student is responsible for reading and reviewing the entire "Practice Standards" with specific attention to the general and specific criteria listed, located at the website, and agree to compliance with the statement as part of the program. 

Clinical Performance Standards

  1. The practitioner collects pertinent data about the patient and about the procedure.
  2. The practitioner analyzes the information obtained during the assessment phase and develops an action plan for completing the procedure.
  3. The practitioner provides information about the procedure to the patient, significant others and other health care providers.
  4. The practitioner implements the action plan.
  5. The practitioner determines whether the goals of the action plan have been achieved, and implements revised action plans if necessary.
  6. The practitioner reviews and evaluated the outcome of the procedure.
  7. The practitioner documents information about patient care, the procedure, and the final outcome.
  8. The practitioner collects pertinent information regarding equipment, the procedures, and the work environment.
  9. The practitioner analyzes information collected during the assessment phase and determines whether changes need to be made to equipment, procedures, or the work environment.
  10. The practitioner informs patients, the public, and other health providers about procedures, equipment, and facilities.
  11. The practitioner performs quality assurance activities or acquires information on equipment and materials.

Essential Job Functions
In addition to minimal requirements for math and reading skills, it is also recommended that the student must, without assistance, be able to:
  • Comprehend and interpret written material.
  • Follow verbal instructions over an intercom system.
  • Follow written instructions.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise, and professional manner.
  • Reach up to six (6) feet off the floor.
  • Lift thirty (30) pounds of weight up, and over the level of your head.
  • With assistance, move immobilized patients from stretchers and wheelchairs to imaging tables or other equipment.
  • Visually monitor patients in dimly lit environments.
  • Audibly monitor patient conditions; and be aware of various equipment and background sounds during equipment operation.
  • Read, comprehend; as well as  process medical requisitions in a timely and  efficient manner.
  • Stand for protracted periods of time without a break.
  • Successfully complete a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification course for Health Care Providers; which should include Adult, Pediatric and AED.
  • Safely work in a healthcare environment in which various Patients', Pathologies and Equipment are present. Students must reveal allergies such as latex, which may impede them from safely working in a healthcare environment.

University to offer master of health degree in advanced medical imaging and leadership

This new interprofessional program available beginning in May will have an integrated curriculum featuring core business discipline courses, guided health management courses and advanced imaging modalities.


Professor earns $15,000 grant to lead research on Gangi mummies in Italy

Ronald Beckett, professor emeritus in biomedical sciences and co-director of the Bioanthropology Research Institute at Quinnipiac, has received a $15,000 grant from the National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program to perform paleoimaging and a bioarchaeological analysis of the remains of 60 Gangi mummies from Jan. 1-10, 2015.
