OutLaws (formerly known as Q Alliance) is an organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and ally members of the law school community. Its goal is to educate the School of Law community and beyond about legal issues and their effect on all aspects of law and culture.
Activities have included a discussion panel on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and its implications on same-sex couples in areas of taxation and immigration; volunteering with the New Haven Pride Center at its main office and also its Dorothy Awards, which is an annual award ceremony honoring local members of the LGBTQ community for their accomplishments. The group also holds an annual canned food drive that benefits a local food pantry.
In 2011, members attended the Creating Change Conference in Baltimore, organized by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Student members have an opportunity to become members of the National LGBT Bar Association and participate in future national events hosted by the association such as the Lavender Law Conference and Career Fair.
