BS in Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineers figure out how to do things better. They are creative, bold and solution-driven, and particularly equipped with holistic systems thinking approaches. They engineer, design, analyze, implement, and manage complex products, processes, and systems that integrate technical, economic, and social factors for all types of organizations in order to improve productivity, efficiency, and quality. They use technology to eliminate waste and properly manage resources such as personnel, time, money, materials, and energy.

Industrial engineering is not just about manufacturing. Industrial engineers work in a variety of industries and follow career tracks including healthcare, supply chain and logistics management, finance, manufacturing, energy, communications, entertainment, food, medicine and pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, sports, travel and consulting.

Educational Objectives + Student Outcomes

Educational Objectives:
Within four to seven years after graduation, industrial engineering alumni are expected to:

  • Demonstrate core industrial engineering knowledge and skills in their career.
  • Successfully pursue professional training, engineering certification, advanced professional degrees, or graduate studies.
  • Demonstrate professional and intellectual growth as managers and leaders in their profession, society, and communities.

Student Outcomes:
Upon completion of the industrial engineering program students will have acquired: 

  • An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  • An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • An ability to design a system, component or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  • An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  • An ability to communicate effectively
  • The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

  • A knowledge of contemporary issues
  • An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
