In recognition of International Women's Day - speakers will address the theme of Women in leadership in a changed and changing world.

Since the first International Women’s Day in 1911, women have made impressive gains. Even so, while women make up half the world’s population, men greatly outnumber women in leadership — especially in the top positions of corporate boardrooms, public offices, universities, courts, religious institutions, and governmental and non-governmental organizations.

And women who are in leadership ranks still face the unique challenge of overcoming the gender bias inherent in contemporary systems of public and private life. Still, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen women leading on all levels, providing the services that keep communities, economies, and societies running. In the words of U.N. Secretary-General António Guterreś, “Women’s leadership is not a favor to women; it is essential to peace and progress for all.”

As in previous years, the event will include everyone at the university – students, staff, and professors – and provide us all the opportunity to truly engage.

Like always, engaging means recognizing the special contexts, extraordinary happenings, and yet constant and ongoing struggles in which we find ourselves.

There will be nearly 20 speakers from various departments, programs, and centers on campus, including Anthropology, History, Legal Studies and the Law School, Drama and the Student Theater, Communications, Social Work, the People’s United Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Athletics, and others.

They will be talking about subjects such as silence on sexual violence in universities, women in sports, revolutionary Chinese feminism, caste discrimination, women’s leadership in politics, and many other riveting stories and analyses.
