Antoinette (Toni) Bush, executive vice president and global head of government affairs for News Corp, and Elicia Pegues Spearman, general counsel and vice president for human resources at Quinnipiac University, will discuss “Navigating Your Career Path Across the Private and Public Sectors” as part of “The Way Forward: The Quinnipiac President’s Speaker Series.”

The virtual event is free and open to the public.

Quinnipiac President Judy Olian and Jennifer Gerarda Brown, dean of the School of Law, will moderate the discussion, which will focus on the diversity of careers in law and draw on the experiences of Bush and Spearman.

At News Corp, Bush is responsible for leading the company’s government relations efforts in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

She joined News Corp from Skadden, Arps, Meagher & Flom LLP, where, over her nearly 20-year tenure, she rose to become the partner in charge of its communications group. She represented global media/entertainment and telecom entities in regulatory, legislative and transactional matters.

Bush also served as executive vice president of Northpoint Technology Ltd. from 2001-03, where she led legal and regulatory strategies. Previously, Bush served as senior counsel to the Communications Subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, which has oversight for the Federal Communications Commission. She worked on numerous bills, including the landmark Cable Act of 1992.

Bush chairs the board of directors of The HistoryMakers and My Brother’s Keeper Alliance and serves on the board of The Economic Club of Washington, D.C. She holds a law degree from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College.

Spearman is a highly accomplished labor and employment attorney and human resources executive who has worked for several Fortune 500 companies. She joined Quinnipiac in April 2020 from General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, where she was vice president and chief human resources officer, reporting to the president of Electric Boat. In that role, Spearman led the human resources function for the company’s 17,000 employees and managed a budget of $24 million.

Prior to Electric Boat, Spearman held executive-level positions at Hubbell Incorporated, where she was chief employment counsel and thereafter vice president of human resources. Spearman also practiced law as an employment lawyer at Aetna for several years before transitioning to HR to lead the Employee Relations Center of Excellence and manage a team of human resources business partners.

Prior to returning home to Connecticut, Spearman practiced law in the District of Columbia and worked for Children’s National Medical Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She is an active member of many community organizations where she focuses on leadership development and women empowerment.

Spearman earned her law degree from Case Western Reserve School of Law, where she was appointed by the dean of the law school as the chief justice of the honor court. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology from Wellesley College, where she was elected vice president of student government.

“The Way Forward: The Quinnipiac President’s Speaker Series” features thoughtful conversations about today’s social, economic and health challenges, and the trailblazing ideas that will drive solutions for tomorrow.
