Wal-Mart closes its Derby location

David Cadden

David Cadden, professor emeritus in the School of Business, is available to comment on Wal-Mart's decision to close its store in Derby.

"This is part of an orchestrated campaign on the part of Wal-Mart to strategically realign its portfolio," Cadden said. "Put simply, stores with low margins are being closed. Although the company professes that it will work with the Wal-Mart associates to reposition them, Wal-Mart does not have a successful record of doing that. It'll be interesting to see if any other large retail stores (i.e., Target) will occupy the space. This is indicative of the changing face of the retail market in the United States."
