Social Media Site Cinemagram
Animated GIFs are becoming among the most popular features on the Internet.
"They are giving people around the world a new more dynamic way of expressing themselves and showcasing their creativity," said Jamie DeLoma, an adjunct professor of journalism and interactive media in the School of Communications. "Cinemagram, a new social media platform that enables users to create short animated GIFs, is an easy-to-use tool that will give more people the opportunity to create and disseminate animations while on the move."
The iOS app gives users the ability to convert short video clips into highly-stylized looping cinemagraphs where only one part of the image moves -- complete with masking, filters and speed controls.
"This emerging network is a game-changer that will revolutionize the way people share GIFs in the same way that Instagram made sharing photos easy and enjoyable," DeLoma said. "It's a logical element in the evolution of social media."
DeLoma pointed to Oxford American Dictionary's announcement that its 2012 word of the year is "GIF" as a clear indication of the explosive advancement of the technology.
