Caitlyn Jenner receives Arthur Ashe Courage Award

Molly Yanity

Molly Yanity, an assistant professor in the graduate sports journalism program, is available to comment and offer analysis on Caitlyn Jenner receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award Wednesday at ESPN's 2015 ESPY Awards.

"Before Caitlyn, before the Kardashians, Bruce Jenner was a sport and cultural icon," Yanity said. "He crushed the world record in the decathlon to win gold in the 1976 Olympics. I vividly remember imploring my mother to buy Wheaties with his victorious pose on the cover. He went from a sports star to a cultural figure. When this Olympic hero came out as transgender and became Caitlyn, she transformed from a cultural figure to an activist. This activism is being celebrated at the ESPYs tonight and, for the first time, brings transgenderism as an issue to the man cave that is ESPN coverage."
