New Haven County Math Teachers' Circle (NHCMTC)

The New Haven County Math Teachers' Circle (NHCMTC) seeks to provide opportunities for local middle school teachers to engage in rich problem-solving activities that rekindle their joy of mathematics. These opportunities are also designed to provide a local network of like-minded individuals and the chance to develop new working relationships. Finally, a library of resources for teachers that support problem-solving in their classroom will be created and sustained based on the teachers' needs and the NHCMTC's mission.

The NHCMTC is a Member Circle of the Math Teachers' Circle Network

There are a couple of opportunities to participate in this unique approach to the professional development of middle school math teachers: the Summer Immersion Workshop and the academic year monthly meetings.

Summer Immersion Workshop June 25-27, 2014
The NHCMTC will kick off the 2014-1015 academic year with a Summer Immersion Workshop for middle school math teachers, in which both teachers and mathematicians will spend three days remembering what it is to find fun in math problem-solving.

Monthly Meetings for Academic Year 2014-2015
The monthly meetings are designed to provide opportunities throughout the year for NHCMTC participants to reconnect both with each other and the art of math problem-solving.  As one teacher put it, "Think of them like book club meetings for math."

Sessions are tentatively planned for the second Tuesday of each month, from 4-6 p.m.  Middle school teachers are invited to join us for food, camaraderie, and stimulating, fun math!  More details to come.

Planning Teams Training
The planning team was invited and received a grant to attend the "How to Run a Math Teachers' Circle" workshop June 17-21, 2013 in Washington, D.C. by the national Math Teacher Circles (MTC) training team.  They participated in MTC sessions in the morning and discussed logistics for getting their own MTC together in the afternoons.  The workshop was funded by the American Institute of Mathematics and was hosted by the Mathematics Association of America. This team will plan the first Summer Immersion Workshop in 2014 and the monthly meetings in the 2014-2015 academic year.

The NHCMTC project is supported in part by the MSRI and NSA.
