Al Jazeera America panel discussion Feb. 1

Jan. 30, 2014Quinnipiac student media and the Connecticut Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists hosted a panel discussion on America's newest cable news network: Al Jazeera America. The program ran from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 1 in the Carl Hansen Student Center, Room 120, on the Mount Carmel Campus.

Three network employees, two of whom are Quinnipiac alumni, offered insight into the network's operations. Jason Driscoll '07, a line producer; Madeline Finkel '12, a prompter operator; and Nicholas Monte, a line producer, participated in the panel discussion.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for students at Quinnipiac and journalists across the state to get an inside look at one of the most talked about networks in the country," said Lila Carney, assistant director of student media and a Connecticut SPJ board member.

Al Jazeera America purchased Current TV last year, which was founded by former Vice President Al Gore.

Al Jazeera English has won several awards, including a 2011 Columbia Journalism Award and a 2012 George Foster Peabody Award for its international coverage.
