MAT graduates achieve high pass rates on Foundations of Reading test

Jan. 7, 2013 - Recent graduates of Quinnipiac's master of arts in teaching (MAT) program have achieved high pass rates on the Foundations of Reading Test, which measures candidates' knowledge of reading/language arts development, assessment, and instruction.

Teacher candidates must take and pass the exam in order to be eligible for elementary teacher certification in Connecticut.

Every year since the test was first implemented in 2009, Quinnipiac teacher candidates have earned among the highest passing rates in the state. In 2012, 98.1 percent of graduates passed the examination, ranking Quinnipiac third among the 16 colleges and universities in Connecticut that prepare elementary teachers.

"I was delighted but hardly surprised to see how well our candidates performed on the Foundations of Reading Test required for certification," said Kevin Basmadjian, interim dean of the School of Education.

"The literacy faculty in our MAT program are among the strongest in their field, so our candidates are very well prepared for this examination. Because of this preparation, our candidates are routinely hired by the schools in which they student teach when teaching positions become available."
