OT students learn about human rights at the UN
Nov. 8, 2012 - In October 2012, a group of Quinnipiac occupational therapy students and faculty members had the opportunity to attend the panel discussion, "Implementing the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education & Training," at the United Nations in New York City.

Panelists included Ambassador Loulichki of Morocco, Ambassador Paul Seger of Switzerland, Ambassador Ulibarri of Costa Rica, the Minister of Education of Costa Rica, and Anat Biletzki, the Schweitzer Professor of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences at Quinnipiac.
Panelists discussed implementing the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training, the different factors that impact one's education, teaching techniques, engagement, and how to improve education worldwide.
Senior Francesca Casalino says she learned more about the implementation of the declaration and global human rights, and reflected on how those lessons relate to her chosen field. "The rights outlined in the document line up with what we are being educated as occupational therapy students to do in future practice. "
"The message was clear: to treat all people with respect and dignity. As future occupational therapists, we will help our clients to find an active place in society regardless of their gender, age, beliefs, or activity limitations," Casalino said.
Junior Heidi Emack agrees. "We as students are taught to treat all clients and people of the world with equality, justice, and dignity, among other values. Human rights education embodies all of these concepts."
"As a future therapist, upholding these values is an extremely important task, not only in my small part of the world, but all over the globe," she said.
