Additional Trend Information

American voters oppose 51 - 43 percent accepting Syrian refugees into the country, but they also oppose 66 - 27 percent "banning people who are Muslim from entering the U.S.," according to a Quinnipiac University National poll released today.

Democrats would accept Syrian refugees 74 - 22 percent. Republicans would ban these refugees 82 - 13 percent, as would independent voters 51 - 42 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Men would ban Syrian refugees 56 - 40 percent, with women divided 46 - 47 percent.

Opposition to a ban on all Muslims is 79 - 18 percent among Democrats, 51 - 41 percent among Republicans and 67 - 22 percent among independent voters.

Islam is a peaceful religion, 55 percent of American voters say, while 28 percent say Islam encourages violence.

Homegrown jihadists pose a greater threat of terrorism to the U.S., 55 percent of American voters say, while 18 percent say radicalized foreign visitors pose a greater threat and 15 percent say terrorists hiding among Syrian refugees pose a greater threat.

"American voters are making a distinction between Syrian refugees and Muslims in general. A bare majority says keep the Syrians out, but an overwhelming majority rejects proposals to ban all Muslims from our shores," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"Concern about a terror attack is widespread, but it is more likely lurking around the corner than imported from a distant land an ocean away, voters say."

American voters support 52 - 40 percent sending ground troops to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Of those supporting deployment, 52 percent support sending a "significant number" of ground troops.

But only 27 percent of American voters say the U.S. should be leading the fight against ISIS, while 66 percent say the U.S. should be part of a coalition, not necessarily in the lead. Climate Change, Gun Control

A total of 66 percent of American voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about climate change.

Voters say 69 - 23 percent that they would like to see the next president support policies to combat climate change. Support for action against climate change is 91 - 4 percent among Democrats and 70 - 22 percent among independent voters, with Republicans divided 47 - 44 percent. Support is 63 - 28 percent among men and 74 - 19 percent among women.

Americans are divided on gun laws, as 47 percent support stricter gun laws, with 50 percent opposed.

But voters support 89 - 9 percent, including 84 - 14 percent among voters in households where there are guns, requiring background checks on gun purchases at gun shows or online.

Voters also support 58 - 38 percent a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons. Voters in gun households oppose such a ban 53 - 45 percent.

It is "too easy" to buy a gun in the U.S., 55 percent of voters say, including 40 percent in gun households. Another 4 percent, including 6 percent in gun households, say it is "too difficult," and 36 percent, including 49 percent in gun households, say it is "about right."

"American voters say it is too easy to buy a gun in the United States. And in a loud voice they say - as they've said in three years of Quinnipiac University polls - let's do background checks," Malloy said.

From December 16 - 20, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,140 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
