April 20, 2015 - Christie Must Go If He Knew Of Bridgegate, New Jersey Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Governor Gets Lowest Grades Ever Quinnipiac University Polling Logo

Sample and Methodology detail

New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie was aware of Bridgegate, the George Washington Bridge traffic jam, Garden State voters say 53 - 38 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll released today. But voters say 57 - 32 percent that the governor did not personally order the traffic jam.

If it is proven that Gov. Christie ordered Bridgegate, or knew what his aides were doing, 34 percent of voters say he should be removed from office and another 29 percent say he should be removed and prosecuted, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. An apology is enough, 29 percent of voters say.

New Jersey voters disapprove 56 - 38 percent of the job Christie is doing as governor, his lowest approval rating ever and the lowest approval rating for any governor this year in the nine states surveyed by Quinnipiac University.

"Did Gov. Christopher Christie cause Bridgegate? Most voters say no. Did he know about it? Most think he did," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"The governor's job approval hits a new low and voters think his presidential ambitions are distracting him from his day job. Besides, they don't think he'd be a good president."

New Jersey voters say 63 - 33 percent that Gov. Christie is a strong leader, but he gets negative ratings on other character issues and on handling important issues:
  • 41 - 52 percent that he is honest and trustworthy;
  • 41 - 56 percent that he cares about their needs and problems;
  • 34 - 57 percent approval for his handling of the economy and jobs;
  • 34 - 56 percent for handling education;
  • 32 - 59 percent for handling the state budget.
Christie for President

New Jersey voters say 65 - 29 percent that Gov. Christie would not make a good president, and voters say 64 - 33 percent that he should not run for president.

The presidential race is distracting him from his job in Trenton, voters say 55 - 38 percent. If he does run for president, he should resign, voters say 70 - 27 percent.

He leads, however, in a Republican presidential primary in New Jersey, with 22 percent, followed by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker with 14 percent, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush with 11 percent and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky with 9 percent.

Hillary Clinton swamps the Democratic field with 63 percent, followed by 12 percent for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and 10 percent for Vice President Joseph Biden.

Clinton leads Christie 51 - 36 percent in a general election matchup. She tops other Republicans by 20 percentage points or more:
  • 54 - 34 percent over Paul;
  • 56 - 30 percent over former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee;
  • 53 - 33 percent over Bush;
  • 54 - 34 percent over U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida;
  • 54 - 32 percent over Walker;
  • 58 - 30 percent over U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
"New Jersey loves Hillary Clinton for President. As she officially declares, our New York neighbor clings to a huge lead among Democrats in the Garden State," Carroll said.

"She also trounces Christie and all the other Republicans. She scores better than 50 percent against all of them; they're in the 30s."

From April 9 - 14, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,428 New Jersey voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. The survey includes 444 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.7 percentage points and 539 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
