Additional Trend Information

New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie's presidential bid is crashing, as only 8 percent of Garden State Republicans back him, a distant fourth place, and all voters say 61 - 33 percent that the governor should drop out of the presidential race, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Donald Trump leads the GOP presidential pack in New Jersey with 31 percent, followed by Dr. Ben Carson with 16 percent, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida with 15 percent, Gov. Christie with 8 percent and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas with 7 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN- uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. No other Republican tops 4 percent, with 6 percent undecided.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the pick of 56 percent of New Jersey Democrats, with 23 percent for Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, 2 percent for former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and 12 percent undecided.

Only 53 percent of New Jersey Republicans say Christie should stay in the race, while 40 percent say he should drop out. Democrats say 77 - 16 percent that Christie should drop out and independent voters agree 66 - 31 percent.

Among Republicans, 21 percent say they "would definitely not support" Trump, with 19 percent saying "no way" to former Florida Gov. Jeb. Bush and 18 percent saying no to Christie.

"New Jersey voters think 2-1 that Gov. Christopher Christie should drop the dream that seemed so possible a couple of years ago, before Bridgegate - a story that Democrats stoked for better than a year and that drove the Gov's poll numbers down, down, down," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"Even four out of 10 of his fellow Republicans want him to pull the plug."

"Gov. Christie scores an anemic 8 percent, way behind Donald Trump, Dr. Ben Carson and Sen. Marco Rubio among Republican presidential voters in his home state," Carroll added.

"If it's any consolation, Gov. Jeb Bush, the long-anticipated leader among so-called moderates, gets only 4 percent in New Jersey.

"Trump, Bush and Christie lead Quinnipiac University's 'no-way' list of candidates Republicans say they would not support.

"The abysmal poll numbers cap a terrible week for the absentee governor, as he's dumped from tonight's prime-time Republican debate and he sees his party's minority in the State Assembly dwindle even further."

The presidential campaign is distracting Christie from his duties as governor, voters say 63 - 33 percent.

New Jersey voters disapprove 55 - 39 percent of the job Christie is doing as governor, near his lowest grade ever. He gets negative approval ratings for handling key issues:
  • 36 - 57 percent for handling the economy and jobs;
  • 35 - 56 percent for handling the state budget;
  • 36 - 55 percent for handling education.
Voters are divided 46 - 48 percent on whether Christie is honest and trustworthy or not. They say 53 - 43 percent that he does not care about their needs and problems, but say 64 - 33 percent that he is a strong leader.

"How's he doing in Trenton? Terrible. A rock-bottom overall rating on job performance and negative numbers on how he handles schools, the budget and the economy and jobs," Carroll said.

From November 4 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,456 New Jersey voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. The survey includes 481 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points, and 538 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
