New York City voters give high marks to President Barack Obama, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, even New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie, for the way they responded to a possible threat of the Ebola virus in the Metropolitan Area, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

A total of 43 percent of voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" that there will be "a large outbreak of Ebola inside the United States within the next 12 months," the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. A total of 56 percent are "not so concerned" or "not concerned at all."

A total of 35 percent of New York City voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" that someone in their family will get sick from Ebola in the next 12 months. A total of 64 percent are "not so concerned" or "not concerned at all."

Voter approval of the response of elected officials shows:
  • 68 - 27 percent for President Obama;
  • 67 - 20 percent for Gov. Cuomo;
  • 74 - 17 percent for Mayor de Blasio.
The response by Cuomo and Gov. Christie, calling for a 21-day quarantine of medical workers who treated Ebola patients, even when the workers showed no symptons, was "about right," 67 percent of voters say, while 22 percent say they went too far and 7 percent say they did not go far enough.

"There were some differences of opinion last month on how to handle medical workers exposed to Ebola, but in 20-20 hindsight, all of our elected leaders get good grades from New York City voters," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"Even with fewer Ebola stories in the news, some New Yorkers worry that there might be an epidemic," Carroll added.

"'Quarantine visitors from places where Ebola is rife,' 50 percent of New Yorkers say. 'Let them in if they don't show symptons,' another 24 percent say.

"'Keep them out until the Ebola epidemic is over,' 21 percent say.

"Voters reject the complaints of some civil libertarians that Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Gov. Christopher Christie were too tough in their response. Just about right, say two-thirds of city voters."

From November 12 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,164 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
