Sample and Methodology detail

Get protestors, even non-violent protestors, off the streets, 57 percent of New York City voters say in a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 34 percent say protestors should be allowed to block traffic.

Voters disapprove 67 - 25 percent of the Staten Island grand jury decision to bring no charges against the police officer involved in the death of Eric Garner. Republicans approve 52 - 39 percent and Staten Island voters are divided 44 - 46 percent, but every other listed group disapproves.

By a 60 - 30 percent margin, with agreement from every group reported except Republicans and Staten Islanders, voters approve of the way Mayor Bill de Blasio is handling the recent demonstrations, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Approval of police handling of demonstrators is 73 - 19 percent, with no group disapproving.

The State Attorney General should investigate cases where a police officer kills someone, 61 percent of voters say, while 27 percent say the local district attorney should investigate.

"In the Eric Garner case, New Yorkers agree with the protestors, but they don't agree with their tactics," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"The Staten Island grand jury got it wrong, New Yorkers say more than 2-1, white and black alike, and they think the feds should go after the police officer. In deploring the grand jury decision, black and white voters agree - blacks overwhelmingly. There's a big racial split over asking the feds to act; black voters are all for it; white voters are split.

"But we don't want the protestors to block the streets. Should you express your disagreement by tying up traffic for other people? Most white voters don't think so. Black voters are more ambivalent."

New York City voters say 67 - 27 percent there is "no excuse" for the way police acted in the Eric Garner case, and say 64 - 29 percent that the federal government should bring civil rights charges against the officer involved.

But voters say 51 - 40 percent, including 50 - 40 percent among black voters, that police should stop someone "selling loose cigarettes illegally on a street corner in your neighborhood... even if it means arresting that person."

And voters say 57 - 13 percent, including 46 - 15 percent among black voters, that police should use "whatever amount of force is necessary" to arrest someone who says they are not going to allow police to arrest them.

New York City voters approve 44 - 39 percent of the job Police Commissioner William Bratton is doing, compared to 47 - 35 percent in a November 19 Quinnipiac University poll and the lowest number for a police commissioner in more than 12 years.

Voters approve 51 - 41 percent of the job police citywide are doing, down from 54 - 39 percent last month, and approve 68 - 28 percent of the job police in their community are doing.

A total of 75 percent of New York City voters say police brutality is a "very serious" or "somewhat serious" problem. Police citywide are tougher on blacks, 64 percent of voters say, while 29 percent say they treat everyone the same. But 46 percent of voters say police in their community are tougher on blacks, while 43 percent say they treat everyone the same.

"Almost everyone agrees that cops are tougher on blacks than on whites, except for cops in their own neighborhood," Carroll said. "There's a vast difference on the question of police brutality: Most black voters believe it's a big problem; most white voters don't."

In an open-ended question, allowing for any answer, 21 percent of voters say "police" is the most important problem facing New York City. The economy and jobs, the issue listed as most important in prior polls, has 13 percent with 8 percent each for racism/race relations, crime and housing.

From December 10 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,374 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
