Sample and Methodology detail

Only 33 percent of New York City voters say the quality of life in the city is "very good" or "good," the lowest number ever measured, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Quality of life has gotten worse in the last few years, 48 percent of voters say, while 19 percent say it's better and 32 percent say it's about the same.

Crime is a "very serious" problem in New York City, 46 percent of voters say, an all-time high for this number, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Another 44 percent say crime is "somewhat serious." While 81 percent say their neighborhood is "very safe" or "somewhat safe," this is still the lowest measure for that safety indicator.

Looking at other indicators:
  • 53 percent of voters report seeing more homeless people than they did a few years ago, while 15 percent say less and 26 percent say about the same;
  • 49 percent have encountered more homeless people asking for money, while 14 percent say less and 32 percent say about the same
New York City voters approve 53 - 41 percent of the way police city-wide are doing their job. Police Commissioner William Bratton gets a 52 - 36 percent approval rating, but de Blasio gets negative approval ratings:
  • 40 - 52 percent for handling crime;
  • 36 - 58 for handling the police department;
  • 38 - 56 percent for handling police-community relations.
"The quality of life in New York City isn't good and it's getting worse, many voters think," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll. "It's not just newspaper hype about the return of the bad old days, New Yorkers say. Many are seeing more homeless people on the streets and encountering more pan-handlers."

New York City voters support 58 - 37 percent having police issue summonses or make arrests for so-called quality of life offenses. Support is 65 - 27 percent among white voters, 52 - 43 percent among black voters and 61 - 37 percent among Hispanic voters.

By a 57 - 38 percent margin, voters want this quality of life enforcement in their community. Support is 64 - 31 percent among white voters, 50 - 45 percent among black voters and 61 - 35 percent among Hispanic voters.

This enforcement improves quality of life, 51 percent of voters say, while 40 percent say it adds to tension in a neighborhood.

New York City voters support 56 - 34 percent the $5.9 million settlement between the city and the family of Eric Garner.

"For a year after the death of Eric Garner, Quinnipiac University polls have found New Yorkers want police to prosecute quality-of-life violations, citywide and in the neighborhoods where they live," Carroll said.

"Voters continue to give high marks to the police and to Commissioner William Bratton." $15 Fast Food Wage

New York City voters support 73 - 24 percent raising the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $15 per hour. Republicans oppose the idea 53 - 45 percent and Staten Island voters are divided 48 - 47 percent. Every other party, gender, racial, age or borough group supports the idea by wide margins.

The $15 minimum wage will not lead to restaurant closing and loss of jobs, voters say 58 - 34 percent. And voters say 57 - 34 percent they would pay more for fast food "so workers could get higher wages."

"'They deserve a break today,' New Yorkers say of the proposed fast-food worker wage hike," Carroll said.

From July 30 - August 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,108 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
