Additional Trend Information

New York City voters give Mayor Bill de Blasio a divided job approval rating, as 45 percent approve and 46 percent disapprove, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to a 44 - 44 percent job approval in an August 5 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, at the time, Mayor de Blasio's lowest net approval rating.

The racial divide continues in today's survey as approval is 71 - 21 percent among black voters and 51 - 34 percent among Hispanic voters, while white voters disapprove 65 - 28 percent. Approval is 61 - 30 percent among Democrats, with disapproval at 81 - 14 percent among Republicans and 58 - 33 percent among independent voters.

New York City voters say 48 - 42 percent that the mayor does not deserve reelection.

In an early look at the 2017 Democratic primary for mayor, de Blasio gets 41 percent, with 13 percent for City Comptroller Scott Stringer, 7 percent for U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, 4 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and 27 percent undecided.

In a general election matchup, de Blasio gets 48 percent, with 28 percent for former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, running as an independent, 6 percent for Republican Michel Faulkner and 13 percent undecided.

"About half of New York City voters don't want four more years of Mayor Bill de Blasio, but it's the old political story: You can't beat somebody with nobody," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"Comptroller Scott Stringer matches de Blasio on job approval, but trails him in a theoretical 2017 Democratic primary match-up."

"An unlikely candidate, former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, scores in double digits and still loses badly in a general election," Carroll added. "Republican Michel Faulkner in the general election and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito in the primary hardly show up.

"It's still a tale of two cities. Black New Yorkers overwhelmingly think the mayor is doing a good job and deserves re-election. White New Yorkers don't like how he's handling his first term and two-thirds of them wouldn't give him a second term."

New York City voters say 55 - 32 percent that Mayor de Blasio is honest and trustworthy and 48 - 44 percent that he understands their needs and problems, but voters say 52 - 44 percent that he does not have strong leadership qualities.

Voters are divided 45 - 44 percent in their approval of the way de Blasio is handling relations between blacks and whites, but he gets negative grades on handling other issues:
  • 35 - 49 percent approval for his handling of public schools;
  • 28 - 45 percent for his handling of charter schools;
  • 32 - 41 percent for handling the city budget.
New York City voters approve 63 - 29 percent of the job Gov. Andrew Cuomo is doing and say 54 - 38 percent he cares about their needs and problems.

De Blasio should endorse Hillary Clinton for president, 44 percent of Democrats say, while 10 percent say he should endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders and 33 percent say he should wait.

De Blasio's planned Iowa presidential candidate forum is a "bad idea," voters say 56 - 26 percent, including black voters 44 - 37 percent and white voters 71 - 16 percent. Involvement in national issues is distracting de Blasio from his duties as mayor, voters say 50 - 37 percent.

Approval ratings for other New York City leaders are:
  • 46 - 18 percent for Stringer;
  • 38 - 20 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James;
  • 34 - 20 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito;
  • 34 - 34 percent for Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina.
From October 22 - 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,155 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. The survey includes 692 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percent. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
