Overview

The School of Engineering prepares students for careers that allow them to change the world for the better. The challenges of the 21st century for both the U.S. and the world are great, but for engineers and computer scientists, they offer an exciting world of possibilities. Our programs are aimed at developing creative problem solvers, who learn math, science and fundamentals so that they can apply them in solving the ever-changing problems of tomorrow. Our emphasis on application and learning by doing, all in a small class setting, prepares our graduates to successfully enter the workforce or pursue further education.

Technology & Facilities

Technology and facilities

Our students master the same industry-leading technology and equipment utilized in the field by practicing engineers of all backgrounds. Our interactive classrooms, labs and workshops include:

  • An Environmental Workshop with Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, where students can analyze metals at very low concentrations
  • A Fluids Lab with Advanced Hydrology Study System, which allows students to experiment with rainfall and runoff simulations
  • A Performance Optimization Workshop, where students can use the driving simulator to analyze a variety of driving situations and conditions or program an automatic assembly process on our fully automatic production line
  • A Machine Shop, where students engage in guided fabrication activities that build manufacturing knowledge and skills
  • Collaborative classrooms, where students engage in team-based and active learning in software engineering and computer science classes

According to data collected in 2018, the School of Engineering has a success rate of 98%, with 89% of graduates employed and 9% of graduates currently attending graduate school.

Our academic offerings track closely with 21st-century careers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, all of our degree programs are in fields having the top 50 projected number of new jobs.

Living-Learning Community (LLC)

First-year engineering and computer science students who are interested in engaging in a community of like-minded peers, faculty and staff are invited to be a part of the engineering and computer science living-learning community (LLC). This community provides a strong foundation for students to develop, both academically and personally, into professionals, leaders, citizens and lifelong learners. This unique living environment brings engineering and computer science to life outside the classroom and assists in the transition from high school student to successful college student.

Charting the right engineering course

The field of engineering is nuanced, and made up of many specialties and sub-fields. Choosing a specialty is easy for some students, and a little more difficult for others. That’s why we offer a course to introduce students to the varied engineering careers: The World of an Engineer. The hands-on class gives you the opportunity to explore elements of each program we offer — mechanical, civil, industrial and software — to get a full sense of which one is right for you.

Our civil, industrial, mechanical and software engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, which signifies that they meet the highest standards of engineering education in the country. Through exposure to existing and emerging technologies, interdisciplinary projects and innovative practices, we prepare our graduates to lead the way in the most critical engineering fields. They also learn to anticipate the many needs of a growing society, and how to fulfill them with the highest standards of quality, safety and precision.
