Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine Training Sites and Locations

In years two and three, residents will primarily learn, work and live in two municipalities — Winsted, a small town of about 6,500 residents, and Torrington, a larger city of 34,000 residents. Residents will complete their training at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital as well as the Winsted Clinic. The vast majority of Northwest Connecticut is wooded, with scattered lakes, rivers and hills contributing to a quintessential New England charm.

Training Sites and Locations

This program stands out thanks to our strong commitment to the local community that we serve here in northwest Connecticut. Across all of our training sites, you'll partner with faculty who are committed to teaching and who act as excellent role models and mentors.

Most of PGY-2 and PGY-3 will be spent at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, CT. Charlotte Hungerford is a 122-bed community hospital that serves as a regional healthcare resource for 100,000 residents of Litchfield County and Northwest Connecticut.

In addition to inpatient and emergency medicine training at the hospital, residents will train in several associated subspecialty offices that are either on campus or nearby. Other trainees at the hospital will include residents of the new Quinnipiac Rural Psychiatry Residency Program, scheduled to welcome its first class in July 2024.

Elswhere in the building, you'll find physical and occupational therapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, a freestanding emergency department, a blood draw center and imaging services including CT, ultrasound, mammography and X-ray.

Enjoying Life in Northwest Connecticut

The hills of Northwest Connecticut provide a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities during all four seasons. Litchfield County is home to many hiking spots including Bear Mountain — the tallest mountain in Connecticut — and Kent Falls, a must-see waterfall that drops 250’ over ¼ mile. All Connecticut state parks are free for residents.

Residents can cool off in the Farmington River — a popular kayaking, canoeing, tubing and fly fishing location that flows through several nearby towns — visit Highland Lake or take a ride on any of the several bike paths in the area. One of the most recognized is the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, which runs from New Haven, CT to Northampton, MA.

The agricultural nature of the area makes fall an especially beautiful time of year. Surrounded by unparalleled foliage, residents can unwind and shop around at local fairs, pumpkin patches and apple orchards.

Should you ever tire of the beautiful outdoor scenery, unwind alongside your neighbors at any of the many breweries, wineries and restaurants across the region or visit any of the several museums in the area. Some favorites include Winsted’s own American Museum of Tort Law, the KidsPlay Children’s Museum in Torrington and the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington. Other popular hotspots include Gilson Cafe and Cinema in Winsted, the Pleasant Valley Drive-In in Barkhamsted and the Warner Theater in Torrington.

When you want to get away, a short and scenic drive will open up even more opportunities for weekend fun. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, the Mystic Seaport and Aquarium and major cities like Boston and New York are just a few hours away.
