(2 cr.) This course will cover the principles of medical negligence and their application in selected cases. Specific topics will include the physician's duty to patients, the standard of care in medical malpractice actions, causation in law and medicine, the standard of proof, the damages obtainable, medical records and other evidence used to prove malpractice, the use of expert testimony, and the physician patient privilege. Other areas to be discussed are hospital liability, the role of insurance, recent statutory reforms, and alternatives to litigation. (2 or 3 credits)
