Intellectual Property in Health CareCarret icon
(2 cr.) Intellectual property rights are important for innovation in health care and public health, and are one factor in determining access to medicines and medical procedures. The course will focus on various types of intellectual property in these areas, including patents relating to pharmaceuticals, medicines, medical devices, and surgical procedures. Related topics to be discussed include patentable subject matter and trade secrets as they relate to healthcare IP, as well as ownership, licensing, and other transactions involving such intellectual property. Policy considerations including the importance and effectiveness of intellectual property regimes and other incentive and funding mechanisms that stimulate research and the creation of new medicines and other products that improve health will also be discussed.
