Karin Schwanbeck is an associate professor of journalism in the School of Communications. She and her husband, Bill, produce documentaries that reflect on the current challenges facing broadcast journalism, receiving a New England Emmy nomination, a national Broadcast Education Association Award of Excellence and a first place award in the 2016 BEA Super-Regional Conference Faculty Documentary competition. Their documentaries have aired on PBS stations around the country and are used by other university professors for classroom instruction purposes. Schwanbeck has also published articles for BEA's Feedback journal and News Photographer and Quill magazines. She became a board member of the Connecticut Foundation for Open Government in 2009. She received the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information Champion of Open Government award in 2017. She received the Morris Berman Teaching Award in 2001 by the National Press Photographers Association. She was a television reporter/anchor for 12 years prior to her teaching career.
