Inspired by Mecca’s continuing legacy of mentorship and support for Bobcat student athletes, the fund marks a pivotal opportunity to expand Quinnipiac’s student athlete development program. The program is dedicated to the holistic development of student athletes during their time at Quinnipiac, building skills and connections which will resonate throughout their lives. The Billy Mecca Student Athlete Development Fund will help to expand programming by providing resources to meet the needs of an evolving collegiate landscape and student athlete experience.
At Quinnipiac, the experience starts with a foundation of support and care that’s strengthened and built upon throughout the college journey, said Matt Raidbard, senior associate athletic director of student development.
The program helps student athletes develop a strong sense of self and community as they build educational, personal and professional skills that will support them during and beyond their athletic and academic pursuits.
“We’re building year over year, so not only do our student athletes feel like they're supported and feel a sense of community while they’re here; but we're also gradually, step by step, preparing them to be successful lifelong learners after they leave,” Raidbard said.
The program’s current success continues to build, largely driven by the invaluable collaboration of campus partners, athletic staff, and dedicated administrators.
Contributions to the Billy Mecca Student Athlete Development Fund will help to expand and diversify the breadth of services and refine the depth of personalization, Raidbard said.
“The funds are critical to expanding the program,” said Raidbard. “We want to continue to dig into responding to the specific needs of our different student athletes and our student athlete population. The Billy Mecca Fund will allow us to continue grow the program, expand the breadth of the program, and also do more of that individualized programming -- whether it be through the campus or alumni networks or external opportunities.”
Created in 2025 and named in honor of Billy Mecca - a cornerstone of Quinnipiac Athletics since 1978 — the fund is a direct reflection of Mecca’s lifelong commitment to supporting the student athlete experience through mentorship and character-building.
Mecca, who serves as Quinnipiac’s senior associate athletic director, began coaching at Quinnipiac nearly 50 years ago. From 1978 – 1991, he was an assistant men’s basketball coach, head men’s tennis coach and assistant director of athletics under the legendary Burt Kahn. In 1991, Mecca was named head men’s basketball coach and served five seasons before being promoted to his current role. He also served as interim athletic director during the respective transitions in both the summer of 1995 and 2015. For over 30 years, Mecca’s memorable voice has continued to energize Bobcat Nation as a respected radio and television color analyst for Quinnipiac basketball.
To give back to Quinnipiac, Mecca founded the Bill Mecca Roundball Golf Tournament, generating $300,000 over three decades. Mecca was inducted into the Quinnipiac University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009 and recognized with an honorary lifetime membership in the Quinnipiac Alumni Association in 2013. In 2015, recognizing his significant contributions to Quinnipiac University and its athletic programs, Mecca was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Honor Roll. In 2016, for his volunteer service to the country’s youth, Mecca received a Lifetime Achievement Award from then-President Barack Obama.
Mecca’s support of student athletes has always underscored a simple truth: the student athlete experience is about much more than scores or statistics; it is about the person they will become. The launch of the Billy Mecca Student Athlete Development Fund serves as a fitting tribute to that philosophy. Mecca said he is humbled by the honor. As a lead donor together with his wife, Jeanne, their daughters Christina and Nicole, and the support of the Mecca family, he is dedicated to helping the fund thrive.
“It's more than just my name – it’s what I believe in,” Mecca said. “My 48 years of Quinnipiac have never been about Billy Mecca. It’s always been about servanthood, the community, putting the institution, the athletic department, and our programs first. And it’s about the pride that I take in this institution and belonging to something bigger than myself. I think it’s a message that resonates with so many of our alumni that I’ve come in contact with over the course of my time here at Quinnipiac.”
Quinnipiac’s vice president for development and alumni affairs, Nick Wormley ’00, MBA ’02, is a former student-athlete and team captain who played tennis under Mecca.
"I think the impact that Billy and his family have had on Quinnipiac over these 48 years is unmatched in the history of the university. You see it in his vision, his work ethic, his willingness to take chances, and his refusal to give up on a student athlete. He’s committed to ensuring you are successful in life, not just on the field,” said Wormley.
When Mecca has the opportunity to offer words of wisdom and encouragement to student athletes, the conversation doesn’t concern production on or off the playing field.
“It's always about there are only two things in life that no one can do better than you,” Mecca said. “No one can outwork you, and no one can be nicer than you. I’ve spent a lot of time during my tenure at Quinnipiac talking about those two simple things. My definition of success is doing the absolute best that you’re capable of doing. It’s being as good as you can possibly be. And if you’re doing that, you’re successful.”
Through the years, many alumni have shared with Mecca how their Quinnipiac journey has shaped their lives.
“I would say one hundred percent of our kids who come through here, when they look back at their time at Quinnipiac, will say that it was a great place to be, and the people that came into contact with them really cared about them. It was more about their personal growth and the life lessons that we teach,” said Mecca.
Wormley said contributions to the Billy Mecca Student Athlete Development Fund will further that ability to make an impact on the lives of student athletes while also fostering a deep sense of community and connection.
“The funds are so important to ensure we're providing resources to our students to be successful on and off the field. The Billy Mecca Student Athlete Development Fund is going to allow us to take that next step to make sure we’re providing the best opportunities for our 450 student athletes. It will help to raise the bar for them while they’re here, to have a successful career, and to stay involved with the university,” said Wormley.
Raidbard said alumni often speak with him about the impact of their Quinnipiac experience as student athletes and bring ideas to help support today’s student athletes.
“Like any alumni group, you’re always thinking of ways that you can give back or thinking of things you would have liked to have had as a student athlete, or the changing times -- what our student athletes need now that maybe they didn't necessarily need in the past, Raidbard said. “There are just so many program opportunities out there that this fund is going to allow us to continue to develop and not only enhance the experience for our student athletes but also continue to build that connection to Quinnipiac.”
