Professor Van Oss at a presentation

Tracy Van Oss, professor of occupational therapy, presented two sessions recently at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare in San Antonio, Texas.

The research that Van Oss and other long-term collaborators from institutions across the country presented examined how students perceive simulated learning experiences compared to traditional clinical placements.

“This project examined students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of simulated learning experiences compared to traditional clinical placements,” she said. “We wanted to understand how simulation influences students’ confidence, clinical reasoning, communication skills and overall readiness for practice. By gathering and analyzing student feedback from multiple universities, we were able to identify where simulation adds value, how it complements clinical education and how it can be integrated intentionally into rehabilitation training.”

She said she’s very grateful for the support she has received from Quinnipiac.

“The university has been incredibly supportive of innovation in both teaching and scholarship,” said Van Oss. “The university’s commitment to experiential learning provided the foundation needed to engage in interdisciplinary work and contribute to national discussions on simulation‑based education.”

Van Oss said presenting at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare ensures occupational therapy is included in important conversations about simulation standards, assessment practices and educational innovation.

When faced with difficult moments, Van Oss had to remind herself that meaningful work takes time and of the purpose behind her work.

“Reconnecting with your ‘why’ can be incredibly motivating during difficult moments,” she said.

Van Oss said she hopes that this research helps programs design educational experiences that better prepare students for real-world practice and support high-quality care.
