Amel Eklund-Torreblanca holds the book "It's Great to be Adopted"

School of Nursing alumna Bonnie Eklund ’03 and her son, Amel Eklund-Torreblanca, worked together to write and publish two children’s books that pioneer belonging, acceptance and the joy of adoption.

Eklund’s first book, “It’s Great to be Different,” published in 2023, grapples with the challenges of being “different,” while celebrating diversity.

“This book addresses skin color, gender norms, as well as physical and mental abilities,” Eklund said. “These stories are based on real situations some children have faced.”

The idea for Eklund’s second project, “It’s Great to be Adopted,” was initiated by her son.

“He wanted other children to understand they didn't need to feel sad for him being adopted,” said Eklund. “He wanted them to see the world from his eyes.”

The duo’s intentions are to empower children to own their individuality.

Eklund said, “My true hope in writing was to share these stories with other children so they know they are not alone.”

Eklund’s time at Quinnipiac propelled her towards her writing successes.

“Not only did Quinnipiac guide me to create a scholarly identity, but it also enriched my learning and shaped my career over the last 23 years,” said Eklund.
