Shannon Flaherty ’22 is bringing her love of fan engagement to the ball game.

Flaherty is spending her summer as an ambassador at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. She’s a Massachusetts native, who currently resides in Marshfield, and has long hoped for an opportunity to work with the baseball team.

“I had my interview with my two current bosses on the day of the Yale-Quinnipiac hockey game, so I was the most amped up and very spirited. They told me later I stuck out because I was so energetic,” said Flaherty.

The part-time ambassador position works within the Red Sox fan services and entertainment department. Responsibilities include administrative duties, making goodie bags, and stuffing bags of Fenway sand for fans, she said.

On game days, Flaherty helps with pregame preparation, in the guest services booth, and with Hat off to Heroes coordination (a tribute to military personnel held at each home game). She recently worked at David Ortiz’s induction ceremony into the Hall of Fame.

Flaherty discovered her passion for fan experience during her time as president of the Quinnipiac Student Programming board and a fan engagement and game operations intern in the Athletics department.

“I talked about a lot of my experiences in the interview. With the Quinnipiac Student Programming, I dealt with audiences on a smaller scale, worried about student feedback, and worked to create enhanced experiences,” she said. “The thing that mattered most to me is seeing people make friends, and [creating] experiences people will remember.”

Flaherty will conclude her Fenway stint on August 19 to embark on a new adventure in Orlando with the Disney College program. She hopes to eventually return to the Sox, as ambassadors become legacy employees and may come back to the job any time they’d like.

Flaherty will be at Disney from September 1 to January 19, 2023.
