“In continuing to make the museum much more of an interactive and educational space across various disciplines, MEET offers visitors the opportunity to explore this collection like never before,” said Ryan Mahoney, the museum’s executive director.
“The team of artists that will be leading these workshops have put together some amazing experiences that will allow participants to interact with, and be inspired by, the unique artwork that is found here at Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum.”
The first workshop is July 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cheryl Kling, an artist, author and museum docent, will take an in-depth look at “Surplus People,” a sculpture by Kieran Tuohy. Under Kling’s guidance, participants will model clay after one of the figures in the haunting sculpture.
On Sept. 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Melanie Carr will lead a drawing workshop focusing on “Basking Shark,” a large-scale sculpture by Dorothy Cross. Carr will discuss large-scale drawing techniques and what drawing from life means.
Carr, who owns Melanie Carr Gallery in Essex, Connecticut, received her master’s degree in fine arts from the College of Art and Design at Lesley University in 2011. She spent over 10 years at the New Britain Museum of American Art, with her most recent role as curator of new media. She teaches drawing at Central Connecticut State University.
There is a $20 materials fee for both workshops. For more information, call 203-582-6500.
The museum is open Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays, and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, 1-5 p.m. General admission is $5. Children, students, Quinnipiac faculty and staff and museum members enter for free.
