The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced today that it has decided to cancel all fall sports competition because of continuing health and safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

This decision will impact Quinnipiac University’s men’s and women’s cross country and soccer teams as well as women’s volleyball. The fall competitive schedules for the men’s and women’s golf and tennis teams have also been canceled. Student-athletes whose seasons have been canceled will still be permitted to train when they return to campus. Quinnipiac will implement training guidelines in accordance with state and local COVID-19 regulations and guidance provided by the NCAA.

“Our heart goes out to our student-athletes, coaches and trainers on this extraordinarily disappointing news,” said Quinnipiac University President Judy Olian. “We will be focused on sustaining — to the extent possible — student-athletes’ ability to continue their athletic conditioning and team training, and attending to well-being of our student-athletes in the face of this difficult decision.”

Greg Amodio, director of athletics, said, “While the MAAC’s decision to not compete in the fall semester is a difficult one, it is the necessary and correct result of a collaborative effort to access the overall situation. The paramount priority in this decision is the health and wellbeing of our student athletes. We are committed to providing them with the opportunity to pursue their academic and athletics goals while maintaining an environment that is safe and nurturing. Our entire athletic department looks forward to their return to campus and our shared pursuit of excellence.”

MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor said the MAAC Executive Committee will work with the Committee on Athletic Administration to explore the possibility of providing student-athletes with a schedule of contests among conference members in the Spring of 2021, in accordance with each institution’s procedures and applicable state regulations. It is the MAAC’s goal to ensure it recognizes a champion in each sport. The conference will review possible championship formats for the fall sports in accordance with evolving state and local regulations.
