The History Department and Asian Studies Program proudly present a double feature to memorialize the 80th anniversary of the use of atomic weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The anime film Barefoot Gen will be shown from 4:00 - 6:00. The film tells the story of a young boy's struggle to survive the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. A 15-minute intermission will follow. From 6:15 - 6:45 the documentary film Atomic Cover-up will be screened. The film narrates the decades-long American censorship of the only color footage taken at the Ground Zero sites. It also highlights the attempts of American and Japanese journalists to carefully document and publicize the human and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons. The documentary will be followed by a communal discussion led by Prof. Larissa Pitts. This event is open to the public.
