Frequently Asked Questions About Student Health Services

This is part of Quinnipiac’s commitment to emphasizing individual health and well-being as a top priority to foster both personal and academic success. QU partners with Hartford HealthCare to operate it on-campus Student Health Services because of the health system’s experience serving student populations at other institutions, its collaborative and coordinated health care model, and ability to provide expert consultation to the university on a wide range of campus health issues including student wellness, mental health, athletic training and infection prevention strategies. This brings extensive added depth in health care expertise and resources to support our students and gives families peace of mind they’re receiving excellent care when needed while away from home.

Student demands on our on-campus healthcare services have grown exponentially, and COVID has exacerbated those needs. The benefits of having Hartford HealthCare provide health services to our students include:

  • Access to over 3,000 doctors, specialists, counselors and others who work for Hartford HealthCare;

  • Prescriptions delivered directly to campus – DAILY – for pick up in Student Health Services;

  • Student access to a mobile health app and a nationally connected electronic health record, which means all their health information is in one place and easy to access to improve how their care is coordinated;

  • Expansion of the range of services provided to our students on campus or through referrals, including preventive care, treating illnesses, mental health, athletic training, infection-prevention strategies and more.

Yes. By having a trusted, statewide healthcare system operate our Student Health Services, a visit to the on-campus health clinic is now similar to visiting a local doctor’s office, hospital or walk-in clinic. Just as any healthcare provider you see at home in your local community bills your insurance company for their services, Hartford HealthCare is doing the same for services they provide in our on-campus health clinic.

Care providers in our Student Health Services Center are employees of Hartford HealthCare Medical Group (HHCMG) and are considered part of the HHC network of providers. Most health insurance plans accept HHC Medical Group as an in-network provider. Please call your carrier to confirm Hartford HealthCare is in your network, and share with them the “HHCMG Specialty” Tax ID Number: 37-1911194.

Students must present their insurance ID card when seeking care at Student Health Services to validate their insurance coverage and to enable Hartford HealthCare to bill the student’s insurance company for the services delivered. A physical ID card is required to scan into the electronic medical record system for a student’s first visit to the health center. It will be on file after that first visit.

A copay is only collected if the student’s insurance plan has a copay as part of the terms and conditions of the plan. Since Hartford HealthCare is billing insurance for services received in our on-campus health clinic, it must collect the appropriate copay in accordance with the plan’s coverage guidelines.

Please note: Quinnipiac will cap all copays at $15 and then pay the difference if any student’s insurance plan has a copay higher than $15.

Students will need to make all copays or health service-related payments directly to HHC when they visit Student Health Services. Payment can be made with Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay, Google Pay or cash. Students will not be able to use their Q-Card as a means of payment.

A copay will be collected for medical services. Students can request that insurance NOT be billed for counseling services and any reproductive health services provided by HHC on campus, and Quinnipiac will pay for the cost of those services instead.

Hartford HealthCare Student Health Services will bill insurance for medical services. Students can request that insurance NOT be billed for any reproductive health services provided by HHC on campus, and Quinnipiac will pay for the cost of those services instead.

Students will be presented with a release form to sign when they arrive in the clinic before services are provided. The release form only has to be completed once, and will then be in effect for the remainder of the academic year (August – May) and insurance will not be billed for any future counseling and/or reproductive health services during that period.

Please note: a release form cannot be requested retroactively after insurance has already been billed. The form must be completed before services are delivered and insurance is billed.

Quinnipiac University requires all students maintain major medical insurance as a condition of enrollment. Quinnipiac offers a health insurance plan designed specifically for students through Gallagher Student Health. A student may waive health insurance coverage if he or she presents evidence of other health insurance, including coverage under a parent’s or guardian’s plan, that provides benefits equal to or greater than the Student Health Insurance Plan administered by Gallagher.

  • Visit the Gallagher website for plan information and to enroll, or to submit your waiver. Use your Quinnipiac student email and password to log in.

  • Students must document evidence of coverage and make an online waiver decision by August 31, 2022.

Beginning August 1, 2022, on-campus health services historically provided by Quinnipiac will be outsourced to Hartford HealthCare Medical Group (HHCMG), which will become the exclusive provider of on-campus health services for Quinnipiac students. As part of this transition and to enable HHCMG to support our students’ on-campus care needs, we are asking students to please sign two consent forms that will ensure HHC care providers have access to a student’s necessary medical information and records. We are requesting all students complete the two consent forms by August 17, 2022.

Hartford HealthCare Medical Group is contracted with a local pharmacy provider (Apex Pharmacy) to have prescriptions delivered directly to campus for pickup in Student Health Services. Students also have the ability to have their at-home primary care physician send prescriptions directly to Apex Pharmacy for convenient delivery on campus for maintenance medications (e.g., an asthma inhaler).

Here are the steps to follow to request delivery of an at-home prescription:

  • Student’s primary care physician (PCP) will need to send the prescription directly to Apex Pharmacy with student demographic and insurance information;

  • PCP must note on script “Quinnipiac Student Health” as an identifier to ensure delivery to Student Health Services and pick up by student;

  • E-script is the best method of sending prescriptions to Apex Pharmacy. The PCP may need the pharmacy’s NPI: 1780621169;

  • The PCP can also fax or call in the script if e-script cannot be used:
