Abayomi O Akanji, MD

Professor of Medical Sciences

Dr. Akanji was recruited into the Netter School of Medicine, Quinnipiac University, in late 2012, as one of the founding Full Professor faculty. He is involved in teaching across the 3 major courses of the pre-clerkship curriculum with specific content expertise in endocrinology, clinical biochemistry and metabolic medicine.

Dr Akanji’s residency and graduate training was at Oxford University, UK and his postdoctoral training was as a NIH Fogarty Fellow at the University of Kentucky Medical School, Lexington, KY and the NIDDK, NIH, Bethesda, MD. Prior to taking up appointment at QU, Dr Akanji was Professor of Medicine at the Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, RI and Kuwait University Faculty of Medicine, Safat, Kuwait.

Dr. Akanji is extensively traveled. His publications are in the areas of diabetes, intermediary metabolism and nutrition. He also holds Visiting Professorships in two Nigerian University Medical Schools and was, at a time, member of the board of the JDRF, CT. He enjoys mentoring students on projects in aspects of molecular endocrinology and the social determinants of health.
