Louis Deaett is passionate about both doing and teaching mathematics, and strongly believes that each of those pursuits reinforces the other.

In college, he discovered his love of the subject and what makes math special – its universal truths can be understood and owned by any of us. As his students sometimes tell him, they love how math “just makes sense.” Professor Deaett believes that every student – and indeed every feeling human being – deserves to have this experience of mathematics.

That motivates him, in the classroom and beyond, to find and share what is beautiful and exhilarating in math. This involves presenting new discoveries at conferences and in research papers, but it also touches on every moment he plans in his classes to let his students discover for themselves what is special about mathematics.

His own journey of discovery led from college at the University of Rochester to a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2009. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Victoria before joining Quinnipiac in 2011.
