Assistant Professor of Journalism

Mike Schmidt is an Emmy award-winning creative team leader and Assistant Professor at Quinnipiac University in the School of Communications. He spent eight years at The New York Times in the newsroom, leading strategy and content creation for visual and digital media initiatives. He managed creative storytelling on the newsroom's social media accounts and led the team that pioneered the short-form vertical video format featuring reporters on camera. He collaborates regularly with storytellers, designers, animators, video producers, reporters, editors, illustrators and photographers. His prior roles include leadership positions at CNN's Courageous Studio, Mashable and National Geographic Magazine, where he was responsible for the vision, creative strategy and management of video teams. He also served as a Designer for the iPad-only news publication The Daily.
Schmidt holds a Master's degree in Art + Design, New Media and Animation from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, with a minor in Film, from Arizona State University.
