Norbert K. Herzog, Ph.D.

Dr. Herzog is a Professor in the Department of Medical Sciences in the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine. He is among the founding faculty of the Netter SOM joining in 2012 and teaches in the Foundation of Medicine course. Previously, he was a Professor, Department of Pathology, Member of the Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases and the WHO Collaborating Center for Tropical Diseases and Program Director of the Experimental Pathology Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, Texas. He is also The UT Leon Bromberg Distinguished Professor for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Herzog has been the recipient of numerous honors for teaching and advocacy. He holds a B.S. from UCLA, an MS from CSUN and a Ph.D. from UT Austin. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Scripps Institute and Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA and University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His research interests include cellular signal transduction in pathogenesis of infectious agents, viral pathogenesis and drug design.

He directed a research program examining the role of cellular signal transduction in the pathogenesis of arenaviruses and characterizing NF-kB, AP-1 and RBP-Jk proteins in normal cellular processes. He was involved in the rational design, synthesis and structural characterization of dithiophosphate oligonucleotide analogues antivirals. He was also involved in the structure based design and combinatorial selection of antivirals. He was also part of two large proteomic collaborations to study arenavirus and RSV pathogenesis. He collaborated on developing novel thioaptamer based proteomics chips and the development of thioaptamer inhibitors of NF-kB and AP-1. Dr. Herzog was also the first to publish kinomic analysis of the cellular response to arenavirus infection. He is also co-host of the Medical Discovery News radio show and podcast (www.medicaldiscoverynews.com). His hobbies are photography, travel, music and he enjoys volunteering with Special Olympics.
