John Martin joined Quinnipiac University School of Law as an assistant professor of law in August 2025. He presently teaches Civil Procedure. Martin previously served as a research assistant professor of law at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he taught Regulation of the Political Process and helped manage the law school's Karsh Center for Law and Democracy.

Martin's scholarship focuses on election law, with a concentration on campaign finance regulation and election administration. Drawing upon democratic theory and quantitative methods, his research examines whether and to what degree existing election laws advance or undermine normative democratic goals and values—e.g., accountability, representation, participation, legitimacy—across federal, state, and local systems. Martin has published his works in numerous leading law journals, and has been cited by fellow academics, federal courts, and the House January 6th Committee.

Before entering academia, Martin was a legal fellow within the Brennan Center for Justice's Elections & Government Program and a clerk for the Honorable Edward G. Smith of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School and his B.A. in International Relations from New York University.
