Math Placement Guide

Last updated October 30, 2026

Academic Support | Academic Advising and Registration

The following is a guide to which mathematics course(s) a student needs to take to fulfill the Quinnipiac University Core and the requirements of the student’s major.

How the Placement Level is Determined

Your math placement level is based on:

  • the grades you earned in your high school math courses,
  • your math score on the SAT, and
  • your performance on the math placement test.

Placement Levels and Courses to Enroll In

Match Your Placement Level to Your Major Requirements

After you take the Math Placement Test, you will receive your Math Placement Level (1 to 5).

Using the sections below:

  1. Match your Placement Level
  2. Find your major* in the corresponding table

In the row for your major, you will see:

  • the course you need to take to fulfill your major requirement, and
  • a strongly suggested sequence of courses that will help you fulfill your requirement in the most efficient manner.

Based on your math placement level, you must take a co-requisite course, MA 106, MA 109, or MA 169, to give you more support in mathematics. The extra class time allows for more contact with the professor, and more feedback and discussion with peers. Refer to the chart below for the math requirement and course sequencing information specific to your major.

*If you have not yet declared your major, follow the advice of what you consider to be your most likely major at this point; it might be wise to postpone your decision to the spring of your first year.

Level 1

Your math placement level is based on the grades you earned in your high school math courses, your math score on the SAT, and your performance on the math placement test. Refer to the chart below for the math requirement and course sequencing information specific to your major.

Based on a math placement level of 1, you must take a co-requisite course, MA 106, MA 109, or MA 169 to you more support in mathematics. The extra class time allows for more contact with the professor and more feedback and discussion with peers.
