A Foundation for Your Future
Assist the community
Students majoring in Health, Medicine, and Society (HMS) are able to intern with Bobcat Community Health Alliance (BCHA), a nonprofit organization run by students at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine. BCHA holds a series of free clinics in New Haven for the elderly, for children and for people experiencing homelessness. HMS students gain critical experience serving marginalized and at-risk populations as they work alongside medical professionals in these clinics.
Faculty Trips and Experiences
At the Warren Anatomical Museum at Harvard’s Countway Library, IDS 101 students studied the famous case of Phineas Gage and viewed his skull.
This trip introduced students to interdisciplinarity in medicine and healthcare while exploring the history of medical practice in the Northeast. Students evaluated how this history is presented to the public and considered the role of exhibition in shaping medical knowledge.
Students visited the Paul S. Russell, MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital to see how surgical history has shaped modern operating theaters.
HS 122 and AN 101 students examined how global histories and cultures are curated at the American Museum of Natural History, analyzing the relationship between scholarship and public interpretation.
Before traveling abroad, students in AN 230 Sustainable Development visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Moroccan Court and dined at Yassine Cuisine in New York City, connecting classroom learning with Moroccan culture and cuisine.
Through interactive medical exhibits, AN 101 students evaluated how scientific knowledge is translated for public audiences within museum spaces.
Health, Medicine, and Society students intern with the Bobcat Community Health Alliance in New Haven, providing community-based care through programs serving older adults, children and individuals experiencing homelessness.
