The Human Code

AI That Serves People First

At Quinnipiac University, innovation in artificial intelligence doesn’t start with a code. It starts with a question: Who will this benefit?

For computer science professor Chetan Jaiswal, PhD, and his students, AI advancements aren't measured by novelty, but by their power to restore agency, break down barriers and foster greater independence.

That philosophy came into focus during an occupational therapy event when Jaiswal noticed a young boy struggling to steer his wheelchair while trying to talk to his mother. His independence was compromised by the very tools meant to empower him.

“It was a moment where I thought, ‘We can do better,’” said Jaiswal. “To me, meaningful development means solutions that improve lives. Not just inventing for innovation’s sake.”

That experience sparked the creation of AccessiMove™, a hands-free mobility tool powered by facial gestures and artificial intelligence.

It also marked a milestone as the university’s first technology approved for a U.S. patent.

Faculty research in artificial intelligence

Quinnipiac faculty have been exploring artificial intelligence for more than a decade, with the first AI-related research publications appearing in 2008. While scholarship on AI has steadily evolved over time, research activity has grown rapidly since 2022, reflecting the technology’s expanding influence across disciplines. Today, AI-focused publications come from a wide range of subject areas and academic departments, highlighting Quinnipiac’s interdisciplinary approach to innovation and discovery.
