Self-reflection is key when choosing a major, yet many overlook it. Without understanding your values and motivations, how can you make choices that lead to satisfaction and fulfillment in your academic path?
The first step of exploration is knowing where you begin. In reflection, we examine the factors that make us who we are. Those factors often influence our path.
Just like people, careers and college majors each have their own unique characteristics. By understanding how your values, interests and strengths align with the various opportunities in both majors and careers, you can make more informed choices and find a better match.
To help you align your values, interests, and strengths with the right major and career, a self-assessment tool can be invaluable. For students in the School of Business, the Focus 2 assessment is available. This tool helps increase self-awareness by offering insights into your strengths and weaknesses, guiding you toward more informed decisions about your future path.
Reflection and Assessment may have provided you with some direction based on compatibility between who you are and the many opportunities available to you. However, this information alone is not enough to make a decision.
To know what we want to do, we first need to learn about it! This can be through hands-on activities, research, courses and more.
